CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Icarus Medical Innovations is looking to help alleviate pain in arthritis patients in a non-surgical way.

“We've done something big for the knee. It's really great technology,” said Dave Johnson, the founder of Icarus Medical Innovations.

Icarus specializes in making custom, state-of-the-art knee braces to help people get back to normalcy quicker.

“It’s an assistive brace, so basically, when you bend down, it springs you back up,” said Johnson.

The technology Icarus uses allows its brace to be the only one that mechanically unloads the joint, easing the most common form of knee arthritis.

“This essentially reduces your force from your quadriceps, which reduces force in your knee, in your medial, lateral, and patellofemoral joints,” added Johnson.

Currently, Icarus is testing a brace that reduces contact pressure in the knee, and the company is looking for participants to try it out. 

“We need some volunteers who want a free brace, who have some knee pain or knee arthritis, to come try out our technology and help us fine-tune what we’re developing,” added Johnson. 

This brace has already helped many local residents get back to activity in a safe way.

“We'd love to have you people come in and work with us to get to know us and we want to get to know you,” added Johnson.
